It had been another long, cold winter in the northeast and the members of the New York Early Birds were more than ready to breakout their cars for the first event of 2015. The 9th of May was sunny and warm as seven Birds gathered at noon at the home of event Chairs John and Darcy Knapp. After a chance to chat and scoff up a few snacks, Darcy handed out materials to play “car road rally bingo” as we drove through the scenic country roads of the Helderberg Hills. Midway through the ride we stopped at Pleasant Valley Gifts, a shop in an old barn that contained a fascinating array of antique and new delights. On the road again still trying to find all the items on the rally list (we hadn’t found that goat yet), our convoy of bright, multicolored Birds breezed along. Next up a stop at the mountain overlook provided an opportunity to take pictures and enjoy a fabulous view. This was the perfect time and place to present our outgoing President, Jeff Emptage, with a token of the Club’s appreciation for his sixteen years of outstanding leadership. Jeff led our club through those years with calm determination and an always encouraging manner that saw us through ups and downs, gains and losses. Thank you again, Jeff. Newly elected President, Lad McKenzie, and Treasurer, Bob Pollack made the presentation of the Hasson Jeweler’s ’57 Thunderbird watch. After congratulations were given all around, the Birds were fired up again and off we drove to Maple Inn on The Lake for a well- deserved food fest and rally rehash (never did find that goat!). Darcy and John were thanked for designing and leading a thoroughly delightful event. This driving season was off to a great start!
